This FHE lesson on language is all about how laughter and wholesome humor can bless our lives – and how inappropriate humor can hurt us.
Scripture
A time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance;
Hymn
I Am like a Star | Children’s Songbook, pg. 163
1. I am like a star shining brightly,
Smiling for the whole world to see.
I can do and say happy things each day,
For I know Heav’nly Father loves me.
Lesson
FOR CHILDREN
Begin the lesson by asking them to think of funny jokes. Have them share their jokes.
Read aloud: It is so important to laugh! Heavenly Father wants us to be happy and find joy in our lives. There are a lot of things we experience that make us laugh and smile. We all like to enjoy good humor.
Sometimes, however, humor can drive away the spirit.
Ask: What kind of jokes and humor are not appropriate?
Read aloud: Heavenly Father does not want us to use jokes or humor that are inappropriate or unkind. We should not use jokes that:
- Make fun of people
- Use swear words
- Make fun of sacred things
- Use God’s name in vain
- Are crude or inappropriate
Ask: How can inappropriate jokes and humor hurt us?
Share any personal experiences you may have had relating to humor and feeling the spirit. Finish the lesson by bearing your testimony.
FOR TEENS & ADULTS
Begin by watching the following video:
Ask: How can laughter and wholesome humor benefit our lives?
Read aloud: Humor can bring a light into our lives and help us find joy in our circumstances. Humor can connect us as a human being, helping us build relationships. However, when inappropriately used, humor can drive away the spirit and even hurt us.
Ask: Is there a time in your life when humor has had a negative impact?
Read aloud: There are many ways humor can hurt us. We should strive to avoid humor that teases or mocks others, makes light of sacred things, or uses crude or inappropriate language.
Ask: What are some ways we can incorporate laughter and wholesome humor into our lives?
Finish the lesson by bearing your testimony.
