FHE Lesson on Scripture Study – Reading the Scriptures Daily

- Advertisment - Save on Great LDS Gifts

This FHE lesson on scripture study helps us bring both frequency and meaningful focus to our scripture study efforts.

Acts 17:11

These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so.

As I Search the Holy Scriptures | Hymn #277
1. As I search the holy scriptures,
Loving Father of mankind,
May my heart be blessed with wisdom,
And may knowledge fill my mind.

2. As I search the holy scriptures,
Touch my spirit, Lord, I pray.
May life’s myst’ries be unfolded
As I study day by day.

3. As I search the holy scriptures,
May thy mercy be revealed.
Soothe my troubled heart and spirit;
May my unseen wounds be healed.

4. As I search the holy scriptures,
Help me ponder and obey.
In thy word is life eternal;
May thy light show me the way.

Begin the lesson by presenting a group of “filled” things to the group. Ideas include a yummy peanut butter and jelly sandwich, chocolates filled with caramel, filled donuts, and chocolate sandwich cookies. Ask them to identify what all the goodies have in common. If you are unable to get the items, print off some pictures and display them.

Read aloud: With all of these items, the best part is the inside! Did you know the same is true of the scriptures? The scriptures are the word of God and they teach us about Jesus. We need to open them up and read them every day to get all of the blessings God wants us to have.

Ask: What blessings do we get from reading the scriptures?

Read aloud: We have busy lives. It is not always easy to read our scriptures every day. However, God wants to talk with us and has asked we seek him daily. By reading our scriptures every day, we can have the Holy Ghost in our lives, feel peace, and become more like Jesus Christ.

Read aloud: Why is reading the scriptures every day hard sometimes? What can we do to build the habit of reading every day?

Share a personal experience about how frequently reading the scriptures has blessed your life. Finish the lesson by bearing your testimony.

Begin the lesson by creating a list with the class of things they do every single day that take up their time. Get as detailed as possible.

Read aloud: We have many good and necessary things competing for our time. The scriptures even exhort us to be “anxiously engaged” in good causes. However, in the hustle and bustle of daily living, our spiritual efforts can lose both frequency and focus. This is especially true of daily gospel study.

Ask: Why is it hard to read our scriptures daily? What struggles have you faced?

Read aloud: What may be more important than simply reading our scriptures daily is to truly have a spiritual experience when reading. It is a wonderful thing to sit and read daily. However, it is an even better thing to separate ourselves from the world and commune with God.

Ask: How can we make our study of the scriptures more meaningful and powerful?

Watch the following video:

Ask: What do the scriptures mean to you?

Finish the lesson by bearing your testimony.

Watch the video above and write down in your journal what the scriptures mean to you. Then, read through this article on revitalizing your scripture study. Make a goal on how to bring focus and frequency to your scripture study.

FHE TreatTreat

Rice Krispie Caramel Marshmallows-These tasty treats are the best! This quick and easy to follow recipe is a great activity for the kids to help with. The hardest part is trying to eat just one! Rice Krispie Caramel Marshmallows

1 can of sweetened condensed milk
1 (11 oz.) bag of Kraft caramel bits
2 tbsp. of butter
1/2 tsp. of vanilla extract
1 (16oz.) bag of large marshmallows
7 cups of rice krispies
wax paper

  1. Place the rice Krispies in a shallow baking dish and set aside. Over medium-low heat, melt the butter, vanilla extract, sweetened condensed milk, and caramel bits together while stirring constantly until smooth and creamy.
  2. Stick a toothpick into the top of the marshmallows. Carefully dip the marshmallow into the caramel. Hold the marshmallow above the pan to allow any excess caramel to drip of the marshmallow. Roll the marshmallow in the rice krispies until coated completely.
  3. Place the marshmallow on the wax paper to cool. Repeat this process with the remaining marshmallows.

Whipped Cream Fling

This fun and messy activity is perfect for when the weather gets warm. Dress up in some clothes you don’t mind getting some whipped cream on. To play, you’ll need cans of whipped cream. Place a dollop of whipped cream on the back of your hand. Gently lower your arm and as you raise it up, smack your forearm with your other hand. The dollop should go flying. The goal is to get it in your mouth.

You can watch the video below for a demonstration.
