This FHE lesson on technology reviews how consuming so much media on our electronic devices can be harmful and how we can unplug and connect with God.
Scripture
For the Strength of Youth | Entertainment & Media
Take care that your use of media does not dull your sensitivity to the Spirit or interfere with your personal relationships with others.
Hymn
1. Do what is right; the day-dawn is breaking,
Hailing a future of freedom and light.
Angels above us are silent notes taking
Of ev’ry action; then do what is right!
Do what is right; let the consequence follow.
Battle for freedom in spirit and might;
And with stout hearts look ye forth till tomorrow.
God will protect you; then do what is right!
2. Do what is right; the shackles are falling.
Chains of the bondsmen no longer are bright;
Lightened by hope, soon they’ll cease to be galling.
Truth goeth onward; then do what is right!
Do what is right; let the consequence follow.
Battle for freedom in spirit and might;
And with stout hearts look ye forth till tomorrow.
God will protect you; then do what is right!
3. Do what is right; be faithful and fearless.
Onward, press onward, the goal is in sight.
Eyes that are wet now, ere long will be tearless.
Blessings await you in doing what’s right!
Do what is right; let the consequence follow.
Battle for freedom in spirit and might;
And with stout hearts look ye forth till tomorrow.
God will protect you; then do what is right!
Lesson
For Children
Before you start the lesson, consider which electronic devices your children have the most access to. It could be cell phones, tablets, computers, televisions, or video games.
Ask: Why do we like cell phones so much? [Or, why do we like _____ so much?]
Read aloud: We use devices like cell phones and televisions for many good reasons. We can call people who live far away. We can watch movies together as a family. We can have fun with each other. We can do our schoolwork and learn.
However, we can spend too much time plugged in. We can miss chances to build friendships, complete important tasks, and connect with Heavenly Father.
Ask: What are some other ways electronic devices can distract us?
Read aloud: It isn’t easy to unplug from everything. It is such a part of our daily lives! As we ponder and pray, we can be inspired on how to use technology wisely.
Ask: What are some ways we can do better and be smart when using technology?
Finish the lesson by making any goals as a family and bearing your testimony.
For Teens & Adults
Begin the lesson by watching the following video:
Read aloud: As a loving Father, God wants to connect with us and be involved in our lives. Through the Holy Ghost, we can receive revelation and inspiration. Through those around us, we can receive much-needed help and guidance. God has a plan in place where our physical, social, emotional, mental, and spiritual needs can be met. While technology and media can often augment this plan, it can also be detrimental to it.
It is important to seek balance and try to be wise in our consumption of media and technology.
Ask: What ways have you learned to use media and technology in positive ways?
Finish the lesson by bearing your testimony.
For Single Study
Ponder your use of technology and media and make goals of how you can be better. Then, go for a walk, leaving your phone behind. As you walk, talk with God and ponder how you can better connect with Him and those around you.
