Get ready for the start of a new year with this Back to School FHE Lesson. It goes over why learning is important to God and what blessings come from getting an education.
Whatever principle of intelligence we attain unto in this life, it will rise with us in the resurrection.
1. Truth eternal, truth divine,
In thine ancient fulness shine!
Burst the fetters of the mind
From the millions of mankind!
2. Truth again restored to earth,
Opened with a prophet’s birth.
Priests of heaven’s royal line
Bear the keys of truth divine!
3. Truth shall triumph as the light
Chases far the misty night.
Endless ages own its sway,
Clad in everlasting day.
Begin the lesson with this short activity. Tell all of the children you are going to play a short game where they must try and get from one side of the room to the other. However, they are not going to be able to walk and they cannot use their hands or feet. A crawling motion is the best way for the children to accomplish the task.
Have a stopwatch and time the children to see how long it takes for them to get across the room. Once everyone is done, have everyone cross the room again, but let them know they can now use their feet to walk or run. Time them again as they cross the room.
Once they are finished, sit everyone down to begin the lesson.
Read aloud: When we are born, we don’t know how to walk. We can’t even crawl. But as we get older, we learn to walk and run. In this activity, you could go much faster because you knew how to use your legs and feet.
Ask: What are some other fun things you can do because we’ve learned how to walk?
Read aloud: Because we know how to walk, we can play, skip, dance, and go places. Learning helps us become better and do more things. We can learn in all aspects of our life. Going to school and getting an education helps us have a better life and become the people God wants us to be.
In fact, God wants us to learn as much as we can. What we learn here on Earth is a part of our eternal progression.
Ask: Why do you think God wants us to learn?
Read aloud: God wants us to learn because it helps us be happy, serve others, and prepare for eternal life. One of the reasons we came to Earth was to learn. Learning isn’t always easy though. Paying attention, doing homework, and not being distracted by other things we want to do can be hard.
However, God promises to bless us as we try to learn new things.
Ask: What are you excited to learn in school this year? Is there anything you’re worried about this school year?
Finish the lesson by bearing your testimony of getting an education and learning. If time permits, share any personal experiences.
FOR TEENS & ADULTS
Begin by watching the following video. Ask everyone to think about what this video teaches us about the importance of learning.
Read aloud: Learning is an essential part of our eternal destiny. We will learn in this life and we will continue to learn in the next life. God wants us to learn so we can become like He is. Gaining an education helps prepare us for service in the Church and the world and also brings us greater peace and happiness.
Learning isn’t always easy. Sometimes we don’t have the opportunities we want or we struggle with certain subjects and feel inadequate. Sometimes, we’d even rather be doing other things that seem more fun and important.
Ask: How can we maintain an enthusiasm for learning throughout our lives? What is something you’d like to learn more about?
Finish the lesson by sharing personal experiences and bearing testimony. If time permits, discuss balancing spiritual learning with secular learning.
FOR SINGLE STUDY
Watch the video above and then make a list of all the ways learning has blessed your life. Research one thing you want to learn and make a plan to develop that skill or talent.
