Book of Mormon FHE Lesson – Alma & Amulek’s Missionary Example

Alma and Amulek faced many hardships as missionaries, but they trusted in the Lord and continued to invite others to come unto Christ. This Book of Mormon FHE lesson teaches us about why missionary work can be hard and what we can do to overcome our fears.

Scripture

Alma 10:12

And now, when Amulek had spoken these words the people began to be astonished, seeing there was more than one witness who testified of the things whereof they were accused, and also of the things which were to come, according to the spirit of prophecy which was in them.

Hymn

I Want to Be a Missionary Now | Children’s Songbook, pg. #168

1. I want to be a missionary now.
I don’t want to wait until I’m grown.
I want to share the gospel while I’m young,
For I have a testimony of my own.

2. I want to tell my friends about our church
And the happiness it brings to me.
I’ll tell them how the gospel was restored,
Tell them how the Book of Mormon came to be.

3. Then I can be a missionary now.
I don’t have to wait until I’m grown.
I’ll live each day the best that I know how,
And they’ll see I have a testimony of my own,
A testimony of my very own.

FOR CHILDREN

Begin the lesson with the following game. Choose one person and secretly assign them a random number (between 10-20 is normally good). Make sure the others can’t hear the number. Give them something to count on. Then, everyone else must convince the chosen person to eat a yummy treat. Have everyone ask one by one, instructing them to use any argument they’d like to try and convince the person to say yes. Keep going round and round until the person agrees.

The chosen person can only say yes when they’ve been asked the number of times they were given. For example, if you gave them the number 17, they need to be asked 17 times until they say yes to eating the cookie. Once the person says yes, begin the lesson.

Ask: What does this game teach us about missionary work?

Read aloud: Jesus Christ asks us to be missionaries. Just like we wanted to share our treat, we should share the gospel. This means we talk about Jesus and ask others if they want to learn about Him. However, it can be really hard sometimes. People don’t always listen to us. And they don’t always believe in Christ’s message.

Alma and Amulek were missionaries in the Book of Mormon who faced a lot of hard times. But they kept preaching the gospel and didn’t give up. Alma was preaching in a city and they got so mad at him for telling the truth the people spit on him and kicked him out.

Ask: Why is it scary to share the gospel sometimes?

Read aloud: No matter how someone reacts when we share the gospel, we should love them. We need to understand they get to make their own choices and our calling from God is to just invite everyone to learn more about Jesus. Alma was comforted by an angel, who helped encourage him to keep going. The Holy Ghost also helped him find his missionary companion, Amulek, to help him.

Ask: How can we share the gospel with our friends?

Finish the lesson with your testimony.

FOR TEENS & ADULTS

Begin the lesson by watching the following video. Before pressing play, ask everyone to pay attention to some of the fears we have about sharing the gospel.

Ask: What does this video teach us about missionary work? What are some fears we have about sharing the gospel?

Read aloud: In the Book of Mormon, the two great missionaries, Alma and Amulek, persevered to share their testimonies, even though they faced great hardships.

Have someone read Alma 8:10-13. Stop and discuss how Alma must have been feeling. Then, read Alma 8:14-15.

Ask: How did the Lord comfort Alma? How does the Lord support us when we try to share the gospel?

Read aloud: Our success in sharing the gospel does not come from how many people are baptized or how many people decide to listen to us. It comes from our desire and our zeal to keep going and keep inviting others to learn about Jesus Christ.

Give everyone a few minutes to ponder on how they’d like to share the gospel this week. Finish with your testimony.
