Book of Mormon FHE Lesson - Driven Towards the Promised Land

Book of Mormon FHE Lesson – Driven Towards the Promised Land

As the Jaredites traveled across the ocean, they were driven towards the promised land by the wind and waves. This Book of Mormon FHE lesson helps us understand how hard times can propel us closer to God and the glorious future He wants for us.

Scripture

Ether 6:8

And it came to pass that the wind did never cease to blow towards the promised land while they were upon the waters; and thus they were driven forth before the wind.

Hymn

Jesus, Savior, Pilot Me | Hymn #104

1. Jesus, Savior, pilot me
Over life’s tempestuous sea;
Unknown waves before me roll,
Hiding rock and treach’rous shoal.
Chart and compass came from thee;
Jesus, Savior, pilot me.

2. As a mother stills her child,
Thou canst hush the ocean wild;
Boist’rous waves obey thy will
When thou say’st to them, “Be still!”
Wondrous Sov’reign of the sea,
Jesus, Savior, pilot me.

3. When at last I near the shore,
And the fearful breakers roar
’Twixt me and the peaceful rest,
Then, while leaning on thy breast,
May I hear thee say to me,
“Fear not; I will pilot thee.”

Lesson

FOR CHILDREN

Begin the lesson with the following activity. Get paper or plastic cups and balloons. Instruct the children to try and blow the cups off the table with just their own breath. Then, have them fill up the balloons with air. Use the air inside the balloons to push the cups off the table.

Read aloud: In the Book of Mormon, the Jaredites crossed the ocean in barges. They traveled for 344 days, being tossed about in the waves. That’s almost an entire year!

Ask: How do you think the Jaredites felt on their journey?

Read aloud: The scriptures tell us there was a great wind that blew the barges towards to promised land. Even though it may have been scary and difficult, the storms helped the Jaredites get to where they needed to go. We will face trials and hard times. If our faith is strong and we trust in Jesus Christ like the Jaredites, these moments can help us reach our promised lands.

Ask: What are some things we learn from hard times?

Share a personal experience about a hard time that helped you come closer to Christ. Finish with your testimony.

FOR TEENS & ADULTS

Begin by reading Ether 6:2-8. Before reading, ask everyone to think about the purpose of the storms the Jaredites experienced. Then, ask everyone why the wind and storms were necessary. Discuss.

Read aloud: When the brother of Jared was concerned about how to steer the barges, the Lord assured him that there was a plan. The winds and the waves propelled the Jaredites towards the promised land. We have wind and waves in our lives and it can be hard to see them as tools for forwarding momentum.

Ask: What are some of the winds and waves we experience that brings us closer to Jesus Christ?

Read aloud: The brother of Jared and his people were in the barges for almost a year. The journey wasn’t easy and even with the light they’d been given and the assurances of God, they still cried out to the Lord for help.

Ask: What can the Jaredites teach us about turning to the Lord?

Share personal experiences about a hard time that helped you grow as a person or disciple. Finish with your testimony.
