Doctrine and Covenants FHE Lesson – A Faithful, Just, and Wise Steward

The scriptures teach us to be faithful, just, and wise stewards. This Doctrine and Covenants FHE lesson teaches us what stewardship means and how we can better take care of our what God has given us.

Doctrine and Covenants 51:19

And whoso is found a faithful, a just, and a wise steward shall enter into the joy of his Lord, and shall inherit eternal life.

Let Us All Press On | Hymn #243

1. Let us all press on in the work of the Lord,
That when life is o’er we may gain a reward;
In the fight for right let us wield a sword,
The mighty sword of truth.

Fear not, though the enemy deride;
Courage, for the Lord is on our side.
We will heed not what the wicked may say,
But the Lord alone we will obey.

2. We will not retreat, though our numbers may be few
When compared with the opposite host in view;
But an unseen pow’r will aid me and you
In the glorious cause of truth.

3. If we do what’s right we have no need to fear,
For the Lord, our helper, will ever be near;
In the days of trial his Saints he will cheer,
And prosper the cause of truth.

Begin the lesson by showing the children a plant (or a picture of a plant if you don’t have one). It would also help to have planting materials with you to demonstrate how to plant a seed. Ask the children what you have to do to take care of a seed so it grows. Discuss.

Read aloud: Our Heavenly Parents have sent us here to earth to learn and to grow. In our lives, we will have the chance to take care of things. When we are asked to take care of something, we become stewards of it. A steward is the one in charge of making sure something is tended to, like a plant in a garden. The scriptures teach us we should be faithful, just, and wise stewards.

Ask: What are some things that we are asked to take care of?

Read aloud: We are asked to take care of a lot of things. We are asked to take care of:

  • Our bodies
  • Our families
  • Our education
  • Missionary work
  • God’s Church

If we do our best and rely on Christ for help, we can help God’s kingdom flourish like a garden full of beautiful flowers.

Discuss relevant ways we can be good stewards. Finish with your testimony.

Begin the lesson by watching the following video. Ask everyone to ponder what this video teaches us about stewardship.

Ask: What does this video teach us about stewardship?

Read aloud: Today, we do not live the law of consecration in the same way as the early Saints. However, the principles can still be applied to us as we seek to be faithful, just, and wise stewards.

Elder Quentin L. Cook once said, “We live in perilous times when many believe we are not accountable to God and that we do not have personal responsibility or stewardship for ourselves or others. Many in the world are focused on self-gratification … [and] do not believe they are their brother’s keeper. In the Church, however, we believe that these stewardships are a sacred trust.”

Ask: What stewardships do we have in our lives today?

Read aloud: Our stewardships in life will be varied and may change over time. However, we can always help build the kingdom of God and move forward His great work. We can make more time, heart, and soul into giving of ourselves.

Ask: How can we soften our hearts to the law of consecration? How can we balance giving to others with taking care of our own needs?

Finish the lesson by sharing personal experiences and bearing your testimony.
