This Doctrine and Covenants FHE lesson helps us understand the power behind the name of the Church and what it can teach us about helping the Savior in His mission to gather Zion.
For thus shall my church be called in the last days, even The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
I belong to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
I know who I am.
I know God’s plan.
I’ll follow him in faith.
I believe in the Savior, Jesus Christ.
I’ll honor his name.
I’ll do what is right;
I’ll follow his light.
His truth I will proclaim.
Begin the lesson by writing the words “I Belong to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints” on a big piece of paper or on a board. Have the children say each word with you.
Read aloud: Jesus Christ named His Church and the full name can teach us a lot.
Point to each significant word and discuss what it means. Some example ideas are below:
- Belong. We belong to the Church just like we belong to a family. We work together in unity and try to love one another.
- Church. We are a church. We meet together to learn from each other. We are baptized. We take the sacrament. We serve.
- Jesus Christ. This is the Lord’s Church. We have His power and authority. We learn about Him and strive to be like Him.
- Latter-day Saint. We live in the latter-days. We will help prepare the word for the Savior’s Second Coming.
Finish the lesson with your testimony.
FOR TEENS & ADULTS
Begin the lesson by watching the following video. Ask everyone to think about why the name of the Church is so important.
Read aloud: In the Doctrine and Covenants, when the Lord sets for the name of the Church, He joined it with a call to arise and shine forth, and to gather Zion. The name of the Church represents that we are all one in Christ and that we can come together in His power and authority.
Ask: How does using the correct name of the Church help us fulfill the Lord’s call to gather Zion?
Share a personal experience about using the name of the Church and ask for others to do the same. Finish with your testimony.

Who Am I Game?
Have everyone write down the name of well-known persons, fictional or real. A person chooses a card and holds it up against their forehead. They have to ask yes or no questions to find out who they are.
