The laws that govern the Church of Jesus Christ can help guide us in our personal lives. This Doctrine and Covenants FHE lesson helps us understand the importance of commandments and how God’s laws can open the door to power and revelation.
Scripture
Thou shalt take the things which thou hast received, which have been given unto thee in my scriptures for a law, to be my
to govern myHymn
1. Do what is right; the day-dawn is breaking,
Hailing a future of freedom and light.
Angels above us are silent notes taking
Of ev’ry action; then do what is right!
Do what is right; let the consequence follow.
Battle for freedom in spirit and might;
And with stout hearts look ye forth till tomorrow.
God will protect you; then do what is right!
2. Do what is right; the shackles are falling.
Chains of the bondsmen no longer are bright;
Lightened by hope, soon they’ll cease to be galling.
Truth goeth onward; then do what is right!
3. Do what is right; be faithful and fearless.
Onward, press onward, the goal is in sight.
Eyes that are wet now, ere long will be tearless.
Blessings await you in doing what’s right!
Lesson
FOR CHILDREN
Begin the lesson by showing the children a picture of different traffic signs, such as a stop sign, a pedestrian crossing sign, and a railroad crossing sign.
Ask: Why are traffic signs important? What do you think would happen if we got rid of all the traffic signs?
Read aloud: Just like we have laws to help us drive safely, our Heavenly Parents have given us laws to make our journey home to God safer. We follow commandments and Jesus Christ’s church is organized.
Ask: What are some commandments God has given us?
Read aloud: Sometimes, it may feel like God’s laws hold us back or restrict us. However, the commandments actually make us freer because they protect our agency. They help us make the very best choices and keep us safe from the negative consequences of sin.
Finish the lesson by sharing a personal experience where following the commandments blessed your life. Bear your testimony.
FOR TEENS & ADULTS
Begin the lesson by reading the Revelation in Context article, “All Things Must Be Done in Order” together. Ask everyone to ponder on why God gives us laws and commandments to organize and lead His church.
Ask: How do these experiences from Church history relate to us today?
Read aloud: God gave His law to govern His Church and as we follow these principles, we receive power and knowledge, individually and collectively. We not only help spread the gospel of Jesus Christ as a unified body of believers, but we also learn how to govern ourselves.
Ask: How does keeping commandments and learning to restrain yourself bless your life?
Finish the lesson by sharing a personal experience where following the commandments blessed your life. Bear your testimony.
FOR SINGLE STUDY
