This special St. Patrick’s Day FHE lesson features a fun shamrock scavenger hunt that ends in a lesson about gathering up treasures in heaven and recognizing God for our blessings.
But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal.
1. There is sunshine in my soul today,
More glorious and bright
Than glows in any earthly sky,
For Jesus is my light.
Oh, there’s sunshine, blessed sunshine
When the peaceful happy moments roll.
When Jesus shows his smiling face,
There is sunshine in the soul.
2. There is music in my soul today,
A carol to my King,
And Jesus listening can hear
The songs I cannot sing.
3. There is springtime in my soul today,
For when the Lord is near,
The dove of peace sings in my heart,
The flow’rs of grace appear.
4. There is gladness in my soul today,
And hope and praise and love,
For blessings which he gives me now,
For joys “laid up” above.
Suitable for All Ages
Start the lesson with the following activity. Draw or print off green shamrocks on a piece of paper. You can download our free printable here. Cut them out and attach them to items that represent the blessings you and your family have. This could be scriptures, a statue or photo of Christ, a photo of your family, food, or favorite items (toys for children, electronics for teens, etc.)
Instruct the group to find the objects and gather them together in one place. Tell them they will receive a treasure once they’ve found all the lucky shamrocks. The treasure can be the treat for the night or chocolate gold coins.
Once everyone is back together, ask them what all of the items have in common.
Read aloud: All of these items represent just some of the treasure Heavenly Father has given us. When we think of treasure, we often think of gold or money or expensive things. While all of the nice things we have, such as phones or computers or toys, are also blessing from Heavenly Father, the most important treasure comes from the gospel.
Ask: What are some treasures the gospel brings? [Prayer, Church, Peace, Healing, Comfort, Families, Joy]
Have someone read Matthew 6:20.
Read aloud: We can lay up treasures in heaven by following the commandments and doing our best to be faithful disciples of Jesus Christ. It is because of Jesus Christ that we can enjoy all blessings now and in eternity.
Ask: How can you lay up treasures in heaven this week?
Finish with your testimony.
For Single Study
Read Matthew 6. Then, sit and make a list of all the treasures you’ve found through Christ and those you want to work for. Kneel in prayer and thank Heavenly Father for those specific things.
