Scripture

Alma 53:20

And they were all young men, and they were exceedingly valiant for courage, and also for strength and activity; but behold, this was not all—they were men who were true at all times in whatsoever thing they were entrusted.

Hymn

Choose the Right, Hymn 239

1. Choose the right when a choice is placed before you.
In the right the Holy Spirit guides;
And its light is forever shining o’er you,
When in the right your heart confides.

(Chorus)
Choose the right! Choose the right!
Let wisdom mark the way before.
In its light, choose the right!
And God will bless you evermore.

2. Choose the right! Let no spirit of digression
Overcome you in the evil hour.
There’s the right and the wrong to ev’ry question;
Be safe thru inspiration’s pow’r.

(Chorus)

3. Choose the right! There is peace in righteous doing.
Choose the right! There’s safety for the soul.
Choose the right in all labors you’re pursuing;
Let God and heaven be your goal.

(Chorus)

Lesson

*Suitable for All Ages*

 Begin with the following activity:

Using painters tape, create a basic web between a door frame. You’ll want to begin with only a few strips of tape. Crumple up balls of paper and direct your family to try and throw the paper to the other side of the web without the paper getting caught.  If a ball of paper does get stuck, you have to add another piece of tape to the web. Keep playing until all the balls of paper are stuck to the web.

When you are done, discuss in pairs how this activity can relate to lying and honesty. Then come together and share your thoughts.

Read aloud: Honesty is an important principle of the Gospel of Jesus Christ and it necessary for our salvation. It is so crucial we are even asked in the temple recommend interview if we have been honest in all our dealings with our fellow men. When we lie, cheat, or steal, we get caught in a sticky web. The more we lie, the stickier our situation becomes.

Have someone read these quotes from the For the Strength of Youth pamphlet:

Be honest with yourself, others, and God at all times. Being honest means choosing not to lie, steal, cheat, or deceive in any way. When you are honest, you build strength of character that will allow you to be of great service to God and others. You will be blessed with peace of mind and self-respect. You will be trusted by the Lord and will be worthy to enter into His holy temples.

Dishonesty harms you and harms others as well. If you lie, steal, shoplift, or cheat, you damage your spirit and your relationships with others. Being honest will enhance your future opportunities and your ability to be guided by the Holy Ghost.

Ask: How does dishonesty affect us spiritually? How have you seen honesty bless your life?

Read aloud: In the quote it mentions how we need to be honest with God, others, and ourselves. Let’s go through each one and see how we can strive to be honest with each group.

Go through each person on the list (God, others, ourselves) and discuss how you can be more honest with each one.

Finish the lesson by bearing your testimony about honesty and sharing any personal experiences.

Bleach Pen Shirts

You’ll need:

-Shirts in fun, solid colors
-Bleach pens
-Cutting board
-Plastic bags
-Tape

Start by covering a cutting board with a plastic bag. Slide the covered cutting board into one of the shirts. Lay it on the table and hold down any loose parts with tape. Using the bleach pen, carefully write or draw a design onto the shirt. Carefully pull the cutting board out of the shirt; make sure to leave the plastic bag inside the shirt to prevent the bleach from bleeding through. Lay the shirt out to dry for at least an hour. Once all the shirts are ready, fill your washer with at least four inches of water and let the shirts soak. Run the washer’s cycle without detergent and then dry and enjoy!
