Navigating conversations about faith and belief can be sensitive, especially when someone is questioning their religious affiliation. Here are 20 things you should not say to someone questioning their faith in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

  1. “You’re just going through a phase.”
  2. “Have you prayed hard enough about it?”
  3. ‘You just need to have more faith.”
  4. “Don’t question, just believe.”
  5. “You’re being influenced by Satan.”
  6. “You’re just looking for excuses to leave.”
  7. “You’ll regret leaving the Church.”
  8. “You’re betraying your family and heritage.”
  9. “You’re overthinking it.”
  10. “You never really believed in the first place.”
  11. “You just need to attend church more often.”
  12. “You’re being too sensitive.”
  13. “You’re just seeking attention.”
  14. “You just don’t understand the doctrine well enough.”
  15. “You’re being selfish.”
  16. “You’re letting doubt consume you.”
  17. “You’re just being rebellious.”
  18. “You’re misunderstanding the teachings.”
  19. “You’re being ungrateful for the blessings you’ve received.”
  20. “You’re just confused; you’ll come back.”

Instead of using these phrases, it’s better to listen empathetically, offer support, and respect their journey, regardless of where it leads them. What things have you said to those who are exploring their faith?
