Jesus Christ is often referred to as the Good Shepherd, a metaphor that underscores His loving, guiding, and protective nature. In the scriptures, particularly in John 10:11-15, Jesus describes Himself as the Good Shepherd who lays down His life for His sheep. This imagery illustrates His deep care and sacrificial love for humanity, akin to a shepherd who knows each of his sheep intimately and is committed to their safety and well-being. As the Good Shepherd, Jesus seeks out the lost, heals the wounded, and leads His followers to spiritual nourishment and eternal life. His role emphasizes His dedication to guiding His flock with compassion and unwavering support.

Here are seven beautiful images that help represent Jesus Christ as the Good Shepherd.

He Numbereth His Sheep

“And he gathereth his children from the four quarters of the earth; and he numbereth his sheep, and they know him; and there shall be one fold and one shepherd; and he shall feed his sheep, and in him they shall find pasture.” – 1 Nephi 22:25Available here.

Lost and Found

“But go rather to the lost sheep of the house of Israel. And as ye go, preach, saying, The kingdom of heaven is at hand.” – Matthew 10:6-7 | Available here.

Redeemer of Israel

“Wherefore, he will bring them again out of captivity, and they shall be gathered together to the lands of their inheritance; and they shall be brought out of obscurity and out of darkness; and they shall know that the Lord is their Savior and their Redeemer, the Mighty One of Israel.” – 1 Nephi 22:12 | Available here.

The Lord Is My Shepherd

“The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters. He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name’s sake.” – Psalm 23:1-3 | Available here.

The One

“What man of you, having an hundred sheep, if he lose one of them, doth not leave the ninety and nine in the wilderness, and go after that which is lost, until he find it? And when he hath found it, he layeth it on his shoulders, rejoicing.” – Luke 15:4-5 | Available here.

The Shepherd’s Embrace

“As a shepherd seeketh out his flock in the day that he is among his sheep that are scattered; so will I seek out my sheep, and will deliver them out of all places where they have been scattered in the cloudy and dark day.” – Ezekiel 34:12 | Available here.

Thy Staff Be My Stay

“Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.” – Psalm 23:4 | Available here.
