Through revelation, He not only corrects and instructs them personally but also teaches timeless principles about sharing the gospel, overcoming fear, and trusting in divine guidance.

In the fall of 1830, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints was only a few months old, and missionary work was quickly becoming central to its identity.

Following the Church’s organization in April, Joseph Smith and other early leaders focused on strengthening the small group of converts in New York. But by the time the revelations in Doctrine and Covenants 30–36 were given, the Lord was directing His servants to spread the gospel far beyond their local branches.

A key historical backdrop is the calling of missionaries to travel west to preach to Native American tribes—referred to in the revelations as “Lamanites.” This mission, which included Parley P. Pratt and Oliver Cowdery, was groundbreaking not only for its destination but also for its unexpected success in Ohio, where hundreds joined the Church, including Sidney Rigdon and Edward Partridge.

Meanwhile, tension between spiritual enthusiasm and personal uncertainty was a common challenge. Many of the men called to serve were recent converts themselves, with little experience and heavy personal responsibilities.

Yet the Lord emphasized urgency and faith. These revelations were received in a period of rapid growth and increasing opposition, just months before the Church’s center of activity would shift from New York to Ohio—a major turning point in the Restoration.
