In late December 1832, the Prophet Joseph Smith received a revelation he called “the olive leaf … plucked from the Tree of Paradise” (History, 1838–1856, vol. A-1, 273). Just days earlier, Doctrine and Covenants 87 had prophesied of war and destruction, leaving many Saints unsettled. This new revelation offered peace, light, and direction—an assurance that the Lord’s work would move forward and His faithful people could find rest in Him.
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints was still in its early years, with its headquarters in Kirtland, Ohio. The Saints there were facing challenges both from outside opposition and internal disunity. In this environment, the Lord commanded the establishment of the School of the Prophets to instruct priesthood holders in spiritual and temporal matters. The revelation in section 88 addressed those participating in the school, calling them to live by divine law and prepare for the Lord’s coming.
This revelation is sweeping in scope, teaching about the Light of Christ, the law that governs all kingdoms, the Resurrection, and the promise of eternal glory. It instructed the Saints to build a “house of God”—later fulfilled in the Kirtland Temple—and to sanctify themselves through righteous living. The Lord emphasized that the blessings of the celestial kingdom require living the celestial law, just as all kingdoms of glory are governed by specific laws.
The title “olive leaf” reflects the ancient symbol of peace and reconciliation. At a time when the Saints were learning to unite their hearts and minds, this revelation offered both comfort and a clear vision for the future. It was not only a message for those in Kirtland but also a timeless invitation for all disciples to walk in the light of Christ, prepare for the Savior’s return, and build Zion in their hearts and communities.
