I Will Lead You Along

Come, Follow Me Study Guide | July 14-20

Reading: Doctrine and Covenants 77-80

The Lord invites us to ask questions, share truth, and trust in His direction. These sections reveal how spiritual curiosity, united effort, and a willingness to act in faith helped early Church leaders prepare for greater light—even when the way ahead was unclear.

As Joseph Smith sought meaning in the symbols of the book of Revelation, and as missionaries were sent forth without knowing where they would serve, the Lord reaffirmed His promise: “Be of good cheer, for I will lead you along.”

Setting the Stage for Your Come, Follow Me Study

This section of the study guide aims to provide a deeper understanding of the circumstances surrounding the revelation or scripture being studied. By exploring the events, challenges, and background of the time, this section helps readers appreciate the significance of the teachings and how they apply to our lives today.

In March 1832, Joseph Smith and Sidney Rigdon were working on the inspired translation of the New Testament. As they reached the book of Revelation, Joseph dictated a series of questions about the meaning of its symbolic language.

The Lord responded with a set of interpretations that became Doctrine and Covenants 77, illustrating the revelatory process of seeking and receiving. Around the same time, Church leaders in Ohio were organizing financial and publishing efforts under the Lord’s direction.

In section 78, the Lord commanded the creation of a “firm” that would support the Church’s temporal needs and help prepare the Saints for spiritual riches. Sections 79 and 80 reflect the expanding call to missionary work, as elders were sent forth to preach the gospel in pairs, often without knowing in advance where they would go.
