The early months of 1830 were a time of excitement and uncertainty for Joseph Smith and the small group of believers involved in the Restoration. The translation of the Book of Mormon had been completed, and copies were being distributed in March.

The Lord had revealed important truths about priesthood authority, baptism, and the organization of His Church. However, these developments came with many challenges.

Joseph and his followers faced skepticism and opposition, especially from local ministers who saw Joseph’s claims as a threat to their beliefs. Additionally, organizing a church required careful legal and structural planning, as religious gatherings in New York had to meet specific requirements.

Despite these obstacles, Joseph and Oliver Cowdery were directed by the Lord to officially organize The Church of Jesus Christ on April 6, 1830, in Fayette, New York, at Peter Whitmer Sr.’s home. Though only about 40 believers were present, the significance of the event was immense.

During the meeting, several key events occurred:

• Joseph and Oliver were officially sustained as leaders of the Church.
• The sacrament was administered, emphasizing Christ’s role in the Church’s establishment.
• The first baptisms of the newly organized Church were performed, marking the beginning of the Lord’s gathering of His people.

Shortly after, Joseph received Doctrine and Covenants 20–22, which provided structure and doctrine for the Church. The organization of the Church was just the start.

Opposition would grow, and Joseph and the early Saints would face severe persecution. Yet, the Lord had promised His Church would move forward, and those who embraced the gospel would help build His kingdom.

Understanding this context helps us recognize the sacrifices of the early Saints and reminds us that just as the Church required faith to be established, it continues to require dedication from its members today.
