As the grandson of Abraham, Jacob stood in a family bound by covenant promises that included land, posterity, and priesthood authority. In that culture, the birthright traditionally belonged to the firstborn son, bringing both inheritance and responsibility.
Yet Esau’s disregard for sacred obligations created tension that shaped Jacob’s early decisions and fractured their family. After deceiving his father and fleeing from Esau’s anger, Jacob spent years in Haran working under his uncle Laban, marrying Leah and Rachel, and building a large household.
When God commanded him to return to Canaan, Jacob faced the unresolved conflict he had left behind. On the journey, he wrestled in prayer for a blessing and received a new name, Israel, marking a turning point in his understanding of the covenant he had inherited.
