When Martin Harris sought reassurance about his sacrifices for the gospel, the Lord revealed a powerful truth: Christ has all power, and His Atonement makes repentance possible. Doctrine & Covenants 19 offers a sobering yet merciful reminder that while divine justice is real, so is God’s boundless love.

The Lord explains the meaning of “endless punishment,” calls for repentance, and describes the suffering He endured so we wouldn’t have to—if we choose to turn to Him. By July 1829, Joseph Smith knew the Lord wanted him to publish the Book of Mormon, but he faced overwhelming challenges. Printing a book of that size was expensive, and Joseph had little money.

He and his family were poor, and none of his close friends had the means to fund the project—except for Martin Harris.

Determined to follow the Lord’s command, Joseph sought a printer. Egbert Grandin in Palmyra refused at first, but eventually agreed—if they paid $3,000 upfront to print 5,000 copies.

For Martin, this was an enormous sacrifice. To raise the money, he had to mortgage his farm, risking his financial security—and his tenuous relationship with his wife. Uncertain, he asked Joseph to seek the Lord’s guidance.

In response, the Lord revealed Doctrine and Covenants 19, reminding Martin of His own sacrifice and commanding him to give freely to the work. Trusting in God, Martin obeyed. He mortgaged his land, and Grandin began the painstaking process of printing the Book of Mormon.
