Come, Follow Me Study Guide – “Rend That Veil of Unbelief”

The first five chapters of Ether introduce the Jaredite people, an ancient civilization whose history was preserved in the Book of Mormon.

In these chapters, we read about the beginnings of the Jaredite journey, their strong reliance on God, and the profound faith of the brother of Jared. This portion of scripture is filled with lessons on humility, trust in the Lord, and the necessity of seeking personal revelation.

The faith and perseverance of the brother of Jared in these chapters provide a powerful example of the blessings that come when we turn to God in times of need, even when the answers are not immediately clear. 

Ether 1: The chapter begins with a genealogy of Jared’s family, establishing the historical lineage of the Jaredites. Jared and his brother, known as the Brother of Jared, are introduced as faithful followers of God who, fearing the Lord’s anger after the scattering at the Tower of Babel, plead for guidance and protection.

The Brother of Jared prays that their language and the language of their friends and families would be preserved, showing his humility and trust in the Lord’s will. God answers these prayers, providing a way for them to remain united and to be led to a promised land.

Ether 2: This chapter recounts the Jaredite journey across the wilderness, where the Lord instructs them to prepare for a great voyage. As they build barges to cross the sea, the Brother of Jared is troubled by concerns about light, air, and guidance.

For behold, this is a land which is choice above all other lands; wherefore he that doth possess it shall serve God or shall be swept off; for it is the everlasting decree of God. And it is not until the fulness of iniquity among the children of the land, that they are swept off.—Ether 2:10

His willingness to question and seek divine answers demonstrates his reliance on revelation and his faith in God’s promises. The Lord responds by instructing him on air ventilation and invites the Brother of Jared to think creatively about the problem of light.

Ether 3: In this chapter, the Brother of Jared, after much thought and prayer, presents stones he has prepared for the Lord to touch, that they may shine with light and illuminate the barges. In a remarkable display of faith, he witnesses the Savior’s finger as He touches the stones.

This experience profoundly impacts the Brother of Jared, leading to a vision of the Lord and an understanding of His divine mission and glory. The Brother of Jared’s faith brings him into God’s presence, teaching us that a pure and unwavering belief can bring us closer to the divine.

Ether 4:This chapter reveals that the Brother of Jared’s vision was recorded but later sealed to be revealed in God’s time. Moroni, the prophet who abridged the record, encourages future readers to have faith like the Brother of Jared if they wish to know the mysteries of God.

Moroni explains that these sacred truths will only be unlocked for those who are prepared through humility and obedience to God’s commandments. He urges all to repent and to come unto Christ to receive the fullness of His gospel.

But he that believeth these things which I have spoken, him will I visit with the manifestations of my Spirit, and he shall know and bear record. For because of my Spirit he shall know that these things are true; for it persuadeth men to do good.—Ether 4:11

Ether 5:Moroni writes to a future translator of the record, who we understand to be the Prophet Joseph Smith. He explains the role of three witnesses who will help verify the truthfulness of the Book of Mormon.

Moroni’s insights remind us of the divine preparation and witnesses provided to strengthen testimonies and affirm God’s work in all ages.

These chapters remind us of the power of prayer, faith, and revelation. The brother of Jared’s relationship with God shows us that even the most profound challenges can be overcome through divine guidance and personal perseverance.

His unyielding faith led him to incredible revelations, and his experience stands as an example of the blessings that come to those who turn to the Lord in all things. These chapters encourage us to trust in God, to be diligent in our prayers, and to seek personal revelation to guide us through life’s storms.

1. Seek Guidance Through Prayer: When facing uncertainty, follow the brother of Jared’s example by earnestly praying for help and trusting that God will provide answers. Make time for sincere, daily prayer, and approach God with specific questions or concerns, confident that He will guide you.
2. Exercise Faith and Creativity in Solving Problems: Like the brother of Jared, approach problems with faith and creativity. Think of ways you can take action on the challenges in your life and seek inspiration from the Lord to do so, trusting that He will magnify your efforts.
3. Strengthen Your Testimony by Studying Sacred Teachings: To prepare to receive deeper understanding from God, increase your devotion to scripture study and personal worship. Set aside time to study the Book of Mormon daily, seeking insights and personal revelation that will deepen your testimony and draw you closer to Christ.

These small, consistent efforts can help you draw closer to God and align your life with His teachings.
