Gospel Q&A is a series from LDS Daily that strives to answer important gospel questions from readers. Today, we answer the question, “What can I do if I don’t like or enjoy General Conference?”

Do you have a question you’d like to see answered? Send us an email at calledtoshare@ldsdaily.com or leave it in the comments below.

Though it may not feel like it, many people struggle with General Conference. Busy families try to keep kids interested. Marginalized groups wonder where their place is. Some just feel overwhelmed focusing for 10+ hours on gospel talks. Whatever your reason, you’re not alone.

However, I believe there is power in General Conference. Here are some tips that may help you experience Conference in a revelatory and peaceful way.

Prayerfully Partake of Conference

We are so blessed to have many different ways to experience Conference. There’s live streaming, radio, the Gospel Library app, and printed copies of the Ensign. You don’t have to sit for all of the sessions in your home. Prayerfully consider the best way for you to partake in General Conference. Maybe you go for a drive as you listen to it on the radio. Maybe you buy the Conference Ensign and mark it up afterward. Maybe you listen to one session a day and catch up on the others later.

You can also pray for help in making your Conference experience better. The Lord can inspire you on what to do so you can receive as much of His light as possible.

Think of Revelation as Strands of Rope

It’s definitely hard to feel inspired by Conference when you hear a talk that doesn’t seem suited to your needs at all—it may even feel painful or in opposition to some of your personal feelings. One thing that has helped me is the principle of scattered revelation. Not every talk is going to be for me. Each leader receives bits and pieces of inspiration and we can look at them together as a whole. When strands of a rope are woven together, they become strong! Elder Bednar gave a great talk on this principle called “Gather Together in One All Things.”

Try to look at the big picture of General Conference. Imagine the talks working together to teach eternal gospel principles and truths.

The Spirit Teaches Specifics

Ultimately, General Conference is about personal revelation. Without it, the messages become random and, well, general. The Holy Ghost can specifically reach you and touch on the things you care about. Strive to be spiritually prepared for Conference by making a list of questions, praying in gratitude for the chance to be led by a prophet, and giving yourself grace as you strive to connect with God.

What are some tips you have for listening to General Conference?
