When I served as a missionary for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, I loved to write poetry inspired by the scriptures. It was also a therapeutic way to tackle the hard feelings and experiences that come with the rigorous work and emotional exhaustion of being a missionary. After facing a loss at home, I often turned to the Book of Job for comfort and instruction. In revisiting Job’s experiences as part of our Come, Follow Me study, I remembered some of the verses that particularly touched me during that difficult part of my life and a poem I wrote as a result. It was focused on looking forward with hope and the promise that we will “come forth as gold.”

I wanted to share the poem I wrote as a reminder that we all face times when we can’t seem to find God, but if we trust in Him, we will ultimately be refined into something even more glorious than we already are.

Job 23

Oh that I knew
where I might find Him
That I might come
and kneel at His feet
How I would plead my cause before Him
Lay bare my soul
at His judgment seat

I know the words
which He would answer
And understand
the reply He’d give
No argument
with His matchless power
But rather love
and the strength to live

Yet my complaint
has a bitter taste
The sword that falls
is heavy today
For I know not
where my Lord is found
Nor, though I try,
do I know the way

I go forward
but He is not there
And then backward
I cannot perceive
On the left hand
He has been hidden
But this I know
My God did not leave

He knoweth sure
the way that I take
And he has tried
each bit of my soul
And when my time
in the fire is through
I know that I
shall come forth as gold
