Earlier in May, a lightning strike damaged the angel Moroni statue atop the Bountiful Utah Temple. This week, the statue was replaced as reported by Deseret News. A small crowd gathered as workers removed the damaged statue and lifted a new one into place.
While the damage was shocking, the statue served its purpose; angel Moroni statues are built with lightning rods to keep other areas of the temple from being destroyed. This isn’t the first time that lightning has struck an Angel Moroni statue. In 2009, lightning struck the Angel Moroni statue on the Oquirrh Mountain temple approximately two months prior to its dedication. Lightning has also struck the Timpanogos Utah, San Diego California, Denver Colorado, and Dallas Texas temples.
