A current BYU runner, Kenneth Rooks, pulled through and won the 3000m steeplechase title after a tragic fall.
The USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships took place in Eugene, Oregon on Saturday, July 8. For most of the race Rooks ran right in the middle of the pack. Part way through the run, he stumbled over one of the obstacles. This led to the BYU runner being at the very back of the group. But this didn’t stop him. Rooks got back up and ran, closing the large gap on the runners ahead of him.
He ended up winning the entire race, beating out many professionals. He finished with a personal best time of 8:16:78.
When asked about his fall, Rooks informed us that he had actually thought about this certain scenario before the race even began. He knew that if he fell for some reason, he would get up and continue running.
