The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is set to donate more than 20,000 acre-feet of water in an effort to save the Great Salt Lake in Utah. The announcement came from the Utah Department of Natural Resources, which stated the faith had agreed to donate 5,700 water shares in the North Point Consolidated Irrigation Company to the state of Utah. It is believed to be the largest ever permanent donation to the Great Salt Lake.

In a statement, Utah Governor Spencer Cox said, “We’re grateful to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints for this generous donation. This water donation will make a real difference to the lake and the future of our state. The Great Salt Lake is a critical asset environmentally, ecologically, and economically, and we all need to work together to protect and preserve it.”

The donation is seen as a step toward future partnerships with the Church and the Utah Department of Natural Resources.

The Great Salt Lake has been in dire trouble in recent times, with an emergency briefing in January 2023 being held to discuss the “unprecedented” danger that would come to Utah residents if the lake did not receive a large influx of water. The report stated, “We are in an all-hands-on-deck emergency and we need farmers, counties, cities, businesses, churches, universities, and other organizations to do everything in their power to reduce outdoor water use.”

According to the Utah Department of Natural resources, “the lake contributes $1.9 billion to Utah’s economy (adjusted for inflation), provides over 7,700 jobs, supports 80% of Utah’s valuable wetlands, and provides irreplaceable breeding and stopover habitats for millions of birds to rest and refuel during migration each year.”
