In an unprecedented move, Deseret News, a news organization owned by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, published an editorial Saturday calling for Donald Trump to resign his candidacy for President of the United States.
“For 80 years, the Deseret News has not entered into the troubled waters of presidential endorsement. We are neutral on matters of partisan politics. We do, however, feel a duty to speak clearly on issues that affect the well-being and morals of the nation.
Accordingly, today we call on Donald Trump to step down from his pursuit of the American presidency.”
The editorial comes as Trump faces extreme backlash for lewd audio recordings released this past week. Deseret News stated that “What oozes from this audio is evil.” Since the tapes have been leaked, Trump has lost the endorsement of multiple Utah politicians, including Governor Gary Herbert.
It is important to note that while owned by the Church, Deseret News does not represent or speak for the Church and the views expressed are those of the company.
