The Fallon Third Ward in Fallon, Nevada experienced a tragedy Sunday when a 48-year-old male, and member of the congregation, entered the chapel and shot a man at close range.
The man, Charles “Bert” E. Miller died; another male was shot in the leg. Miller was 61-years-old and had served for a number of years as the gunman’s home teacher.
“We have recently learned of a shooting in Fallon, Nevada, during a church service,” said Eric Hawkins, spokesman for the LDS Church. “Details are still developing, and inquiries should be directed to local law enforcement personnel.
“We express our love to those in this congregation and our prayers for the victims and their families. Local leaders are ministering to them at this time.”
The gunman left the chapel and returned home, where he surrendered to police. No motive has been given at this time, but witnesses he targeted the deceased victim specifically. The shooting took place after the sacrament had been passed to the congregation and as the first speaker rose to the pulpit.
Nevada senators responded on Twitter to the tragedy.
Devastated by the horrific news of the fatal shooting at the LDS church in Fallon. Thank you to the first responders on the scene. My heart goes out to all of those impacted. Places of worship should be a safe haven. The gun violence across this country must end.
