It is with much sadness that The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints shares the names of the 10 Latter-day Saints from the Maputsoe Lesotho Branch, along with their two drivers, who tragically passed away in a multi-vehicle accident on Saturday, June 21, 2025, near Maputsoe while traveling to a Church Young Women activity. The Church expresses its deepest sympathies to the families and friends of those who were lost and extends heartfelt prayers to all who are affected.

The Church also extends its deepest sympathies to the families of the two victims in the other vehicle involved in the accident. Our prayers are with them as well during this time of grief.
A memorial service was held on Wednesday, July 16, 2025, to honor those who tragically lost their lives. Family members, friends, and community leaders came together in a time of grief, sharing tributes, offering comfort, and drawing strength from one another.

During the memorial service, dignitaries, government officials, and members of the Church offered their heartfelt condolences. Tributes were shared, celebrating the lives of those lost, and the gathering was a testament to the love and faith they left behind.

A Message of Hope and Healing
As the Church of Jesus Christ continues to support the grieving families, our hearts are filled with gratitude for the lives of those we have lost. We honor their legacy of faith, service, and love for others. Elder Carlos A. Godoy, President Denelson Silva, and President Vaiangina Sikahema of the Africa South Area Presidency shared their condolences, expressing the deep sadness felt by all. “We extend our love and heartfelt condolences to the families and friends who are grieving,” the Area Presidency said. “We honor the lives of those who have passed and pray that all may feel the comforting peace and healing power of our Savior Jesus Christ during this time of sorrow.”

The Savior’s Healing Power
As we reflect on this loss, we turn to the Savior for comfort and healing. His love and sacrifice provide peace even in the darkest moments. We trust in the promise that through Him, broken hearts can be healed, and that those who have passed from this life will be reunited with their loved ones in the resurrection.
Our thoughts and prayers are also with the survivors, who are now on their path to recovery. We pray for their healing, strength, and comfort as they navigate this difficult journey.
Looking Ahead
A joint funeral service will be held on Saturday, July 19, 2025, open to all, followed by individual graveside services in accordance with the families’ wishes. The Church remains committed to supporting the grieving families during this time of loss, and we are deeply grateful for the love and support from all who have expressed their concern.
We honor the lives of those lost in this tragedy and find peace in knowing that they are in the care of our loving Savior. As we move forward, may we all be strengthened by our faith in Jesus Christ and the hope of eternal life.

We are shocked to learn of this tragedy. Trudy and I (Bruce Norman) served in the Johannesburg S Africa mission and had the opportunity to visit the saints in Lesotho. There are no more faithful and kind saints anywhere in the world and we grew to love them so much. Our prayers join with their’s for peace and comfort.
