Kirtland. To this day, the signs welcoming you to the town still say, “A City of Faith and Beauty.” Kirtland, Ohio holds a special place in the history of the Restoration of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. It is where the first temple in this dispensation was built and where many glorious truths were both restored and revealed. Jesus Christ himself appeared to many in Kirtland while the Saints lived there before persecution drove them west.
Over the years, the Church has worked to maintain the beautiful and historical buildings and landmarks that still exist in Kirtland. What many people do not know is that a busy road once ran right through the middle of Kirtland. When President Gordon B. Hinckley almost got hit by a car while crossing the street, the Church desired to move the road out of the historic sites completely. Little did they know, it would take a photo of Steve Young on the cover of Sports Illustrated to make it happen. Watch Young tell the story in his own words.
