Excitement filled the air at Payson High School today as Hollywood star Kevin Bacon confirmed his attendance at their upcoming prom. The event will take place in the school building where the legendary movie ‘Footloose’ was filmed.

Students have been campaigning for the actor to come back and celebrate the film’s 40th anniversary, using the hashtag #BacontoPayson online. The school performed Footloose the Musical,

On Friday, students gathered with the TODAY Show to her a special message from Bacon.

“I have been so impressed with everything that’s been going on there, with this crazy idea to get me to come back,” he said over a live video link. “I don’t need to say it, but the movie and Payson High School was a big part of my life and I’ve been amazed at the work that all of you have been putting into this, with the musical and the flash mobs and the recreations. It hasn’t gone unnoticed by me, not to mention the fact that you tied in sixdegrees.org, our foundation, and are trying to figure out ways to give back to your community. It’s really inspirational. So, thank you, thank you, and… I’m going to come. I’ve got to come.”

Students cheered and celebrated at the news. Part of the effort mentioned by Bacon includes a service project for his charitable foundation, SixDegrees, where the Payson community will build resource bags for neighbors in need.

“These young people really worked hard and getting our attention and it’s been fun to follow along this past year!” the foundation shared on social media. “We will be building a minimum of 5,000 resource kits for 4 incredible organizations serving youth and families in crisis across Utah, Nevada and Colorado. This takes place on April 20th at the football field in Payson. If your brand or company want to be involved, please reach out to the folks at SixDegrees. We are looking for a few more sponsors and donors to make this an event filled with relentless joy and meaningful impact.”

“You can join us in supporting these resource kits by heading to pledge.to/bacontopayson

‘Footloose’ was filmed in Utah County, with locations in Payson, American Fork, Provo, and others. Payson High School was used for all of the school scenes in the film. The upcoming prom is one of the last chances for such a reunion to happen—the current building and former film location is set to be demolished as a new school opens in 2025.
