Latter-day Saint rugby coach Larry Gelwix will be inducted into the U.S. Rugby Hall of Fame later this summer, celebrating over three decades of coaching.
“Dubbed by the national media as the ‘Winningest Coach in America,’ Larry established an unbelievable varsity record of 418 wins and only 10 losses while coaching for 36 years at Highland High School in Salt Lake City, Utah,” the U.S. Rugby Foundation said of Gelwix as part of the official announcement.
“That mark has yet to be matched by any other high school or college rugby coach in the country. For that matter, Larry’s accomplishment could be argued to be the best winning percentage of any coach in any sport in America.”
Gelwix told Fox 13 News that he “literally teared up” when he got the call from the USRF. Many Latter-day Saints will know Gelwix’s story from the feature film Forever Strong.
“For me, it’s a shared award with over 3,000 boys’ names that in my heart will always be on that Hall of Fame,” Gelwix said.
Now retired, Gelwix works as the “Getaway Guru,” hosting a travel radio show and YouTube channel. He served as a mission president in the California Fresno Mission, and continues to motivate others through speaking.
