Sam Penrod, a spokesman with The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, released the following statement on Sunday, March 3, 2024:
It is with heavy hearts that we share the news of the passing of a missionary of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, serving in the New Jersey Morristown Mission. Elder Mack Jared Chappell, age 19, passed away Saturday, March 2, 2024, from a yet to be determined medical condition. Elder Chappell became unresponsive early Saturday morning and attempts to revive him were unsuccessful. Elder Chappell, of Sugar City, Idaho, has been serving as a missionary since July 10, 2023. Our prayers are with Elder Chappell’s family, friends, and fellow missionaries, during this difficult time. May they each find solace and comfort in the Savior and His gospel, as they remember this faithful missionary.

Sarah wrote, Mack’s alter ego is Spider-Man. Spidey says “WITH GREAT POWER COMES GREAT RESPONSIBILITY.” Mack lived this truth. He was provided a beautiful, wonderful, blessed life…but he also carried the weight of his roles and responsibilities as older brother, as a leader and as a disciple of Jesus Christ very literally. Always watching out, always careful, always with a heart full of love.
Life here in our little world will never be the same without Mack in it. But I thank God that he is ours and I know that my safe place to be right now and moving forward is in the comforting arms of my loving Savior and the covenants I’ve made with Him. Those promises and blessings that tie me to Mack. Forever.
Donna shared: Mack is forever in our hearts. From the minute we met him he did not let one day go by without expressing his love and beautiful spirit in so many ways. This guy is so missed and loved in our home.
Elder Chappell wrote on his own social media the following testimony:
“I’ve been blessed to serve God and be a disciple of him as a missionary. I find joy in helping others come closer to to our Heavenly Father and Christ. I love the opportunity to wake up and to serve him everyday and try to spread the good news to all that Jesus is risen and because of him we can have eternal life with him!!!! As I’ve been serving I’ve learn how much God is in the detail of are lives and how he can give us pure joy that only can come through him. I know as I have grown closer to my Savior I have felt his love and joy in my life!!! How have you felt joy in Christ??”
