LDS Senator from Arizona Jeff Flake is receiving media attention after a shooter opened fire during a Republican congressional baseball practice in Alexandria, Virginia, where House Majority Whip Steve Scalise and several others were wounded. Flake was on the field as the shooting began and went with Rep. Brad Wenstrup to Scalise’s side to apply pressure to his wound as soon as they were able. Flake was the first to reach Scalise’s side.
You can watch Flake speaking to the media below.
Former President Barack Obama reached out to Flake, who accompanied Obama to Arizona to visit Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords after she was shot in 2011, to extend his “best wishes and prayers” to all of the victims.
Scalise underwent surgery for a single rifle shot through his left hip, which damaged bone and internal organs. He is still in critical condition. A former congressional staffer, Matt Mika, is also in critical condition. The other victims are in good condition and many have been released from the hospital. More information will be provided as it develops.
