A tragic accident rocked one LDS congregation in Draper this past Sunday morning. Just five minutes before the meetings were about to begin, Jim H. Petersen, a 57-year-old man from Bluffdale, crashed into the roof of the building. He was operating a fan-powered glider and died at the scene, according to Deseret News. The building was quickly evacuated and all church services cancelled for the day.
Draper Police Sgt. Chad Carpenter told Deseret News, “Something happened where he lost control and crashed.” The police are currently interviewing witnesses and trying to piece together what happened. It is currently unclear if there was a malfunction with the glider or if an unknown medical condition caused the accident during the flight.
Petersen was an experienced paraglider; one friend stated he flew 200 days of the year, even going out twice a day on occasion.
