Twelve More Temples to Reopen Next Monday
For the past five weeks, temple reopenings have been announced each Monday, and this Monday is no exception. Twelve more temples will open under Phase 1 of the reopening plan on Monday, June 15, in Brazil, the Philippines, South Africa, Tonga, and the United States. This will bring the total number of temples that are operating under Phase 1 restrictions to 89.
Laying Brick at the Vernal Utah Temple
As part of the Vernal Utah Temple parking lot expansion project, new landscape structures have been poured in front of the entrance to the temple to create a courtyard-like feature. The short walls will be made of brick to coordinate with the historic building that had originally been constructed as a tabernacle. Before the project began, asphalt abutted the temple entrance. But through the acquisition of the street and several residences to the east, there will now be ample parking and beautiful landscaping to greet temple patrons.
St. George Utah Temple Annex Growing
The basement for the St. George Utah Temple Annex is in place, and walls are rising for the superstructure of the building in a combination of structural steel and concrete block. The annex will serve as the main entrance to the temple, featuring elegant arched windows and doorways cased in ornamental moldings. The rear (west) side of the building will be significantly extended and include stairs, elevators, and restrooms.
Freshening Up the Bountiful Utah Temple
The ornate moldings around the windows and inscription stones on the exterior of the Bountiful Utah Temple are being painted as part of a maintenance project. Contractors are also working on the roof, turning the beige-colored surface a brilliant white. Blue tarps were lifted up to protect rooftop equipment. Last year, the stairs and landscaping on the east side of the temple were renovated.
Waterproofing the Abidjan Côte d’Ivoire Temple
A black waterproofing membrane is being applied to the exterior concrete walls of the Abidjan Côte d’Ivoire Temple to provide protection against the high humidity of the country’s coastal region. Crews have also been at work inside the building, which features a full basement level and main floor level. Local members hope to see the temple completed next year.
Bighorn Fire Threatens Tucson Arizona Temple
The Tucson Arizona Temple was put on alert last night of a potential evacuation order due to the raging Bighorn Fire. There are over 850 homes in the area under evacuation threat and nearly 300 homes already under evacuation orders. The temple has been minimally staffed since late March when it temporarily closed in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
