Temple News & Updates | Week of 22 April 2018

Houston Temple Rededicated

President M. Russell Ballard rededicated the Houston Texas Temple on Sunday 22 April 2018. The temple was closed in late August 2017, following the widespread devastation of Hurricane Harvey. The temple was breached by floodwaters and underwent many repairs. The temple is now operating on a normal schedule.

An Update from Rome

At the Rome Italy Temple, crews have completed an asphalt driveway which leads to the parking area. Water tests are underway on the plaza water feature, and a concrete slab is in place for a monument sign.

Cladding Continues in Portugal

Crews at the Lisbon Portugal Temple have moved toward the back exterior walls of the building, adding a vapor barrier and attaching stone cladding. Scaffolding netting surrounds the building to assist workers in this task. Elsewhere on the property, more sections of the parking surface have been laid.

Remodel Progress Update

After a two and a half year long remodel, crews at the Frankfurt Germany Temple are making significant progress toward the temple being rededicated. Work on the basement addition and underground tunnels have progressed to the point where crews can begin reattaching the stone cladding to front exterior walls. No official date has been announced, but the temple is estimated to be completed in early to mid-2019.

Gilding in Colombia

Craftsmen at the Barranquilla Colombia Temple have set about the task of gilding Holiness to the Lord—The House of the Lord on the structure’s eastern wall. The temple is nearly  completed and will be dedicated in December 2018.

Water Feature Removed in Oakland

The iconic water feature at the Oakland California Temple grounds has been removed. The fountain was bookended by man-made creeks and gardens, which have additionally been removed. Interior renovations are well underway. The temple is estimated to be closed until 2019, though no official date has been announced.

Property Fence Rising in DRC

A secure concrete block wall is being constructed around the Kinshasa Democratic Republic of the Congo Temple site. Work is also progressing on shingling the front sloop of the structure’s roof, just behind the steeple.

Palm Trees Outline Property in Brazil

Landscaping of the Fortaleza Brazil Temple is making steady progress. Palm trees and grass have been planted around the perimeter of the property and around an oval garden feature, located just behind the temple.

Cladding Preparations in Rio

The concrete walls of the Rio de Janeiro Brazil Temple are being waterproofed and wrapped in a vapor barrier in advance of crews cladding the walls in precast stone.  The temple is estimated to be complete in early 2020.
