The First Presidency of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has set the open house and dedication schedule for the Montpelier Idaho Temple, outlining a series of events that will begin in early September and conclude with a dedicatory session in October. According to a Church Newsroom release, these dates mark the next phase in bringing the temple into full operation for members in the region.
Church leaders will begin the opening events with a media day on Tuesday, September 8, 2026, followed by private tours for invited guests on September 9. Public tours will then open to visitors from Thursday, September 10, through Saturday, September 26, with tours paused on Sundays.
Public Tours and Dedication Plans

The Church has structured the public open house to allow community members and visitors to walk through the temple and learn about its purpose before it is formally dedicated. These tours will provide an opportunity for individuals of all faiths to enter the building, view its interior, and gain a clearer understanding of how Latter-day Saints use temples in their worship.
The First Presidency has scheduled the dedication for Sunday, October 18, 2026, at 10 a.m., with a rebroadcast at 2 p.m. The Church will broadcast the dedicatory session to all congregations within the temple’s district, allowing members across the region to participate in the service.
Idaho’s Growing Temple Presence

The Montpelier Idaho Temple will become the eighth dedicated temple in the state, expanding an already established presence of temple worship in Idaho. It will join existing temples in Boise, Burley, Idaho Falls, Meridian, Pocatello, Rexburg, and Twin Falls.
The Church has also continued to expand temple construction and planning efforts across Idaho, with three additional temples in progress or announced. The Teton River Idaho Temple is currently under construction, while the Caldwell Idaho Temple and Coeur d’Alene Idaho Temple remain in the planning stages following their announcements.
Church Membership in Idaho
Idaho is home to a large population of Latter-day Saints, with more than 482,000 members meeting in over 1,300 congregations across the state. This strong membership base has contributed to the steady development of temples in the region, providing members with increased access to temple worship.
The Montpelier Idaho Temple will serve members in its assigned district, helping reduce travel time for those who previously attended temples in other Idaho cities. The Church continues to organize temple locations in a way that brings these sacred spaces closer to where members live.
Announcement and Purpose of the Temple

President Russell M. Nelson first announced the Montpelier Idaho Temple in April 2022 during general conference. That announcement placed the temple among a broader list of new temples intended to meet the needs of a growing global membership.
In a recent general conference address, President Dallin H. Oaks explained the doctrinal importance of temples within God’s plan. He said, “God’s plan, founded on eternal truth, requires that exaltation can be attained only through faithfulness to the covenants of an eternal marriage between a man and a woman in the holy temple, which marriage will ultimately be available to all the faithful.”
Understanding the Role of Temples

The Church distinguishes temples from its regular meetinghouses, where members gather for weekly Sunday worship services. Temples serve a different and more specific purpose, focusing on sacred ordinances and covenants that Latter-day Saints believe bind families together beyond mortality.
Church teachings describe the temple as a house of the Lord, where individuals participate in ceremonies such as marriage and baptism for the dead. These ordinances reflect core beliefs about eternal families and the continuation of relationships after death, reinforcing the central role temples play in Latter-day Saint worship.
A New House of the Lord in Montpelier

The Montpelier Idaho Temple represents another step in the Church’s ongoing effort to expand access to temple worship for its members. By establishing a temple in Montpelier, the Church brings these ordinances closer to local congregations and strengthens its presence in southeastern Idaho.
As the open house and dedication approach, Church leaders have provided a clear timeline for members and the public to engage with the temple before it becomes fully operational. These events will introduce the building to the community and prepare it for its role as a place of worship for generations to come.
