As part of the ongoing rollout of the Church’s new worldwide hymnbook, nine additional hymns have been introduced to the “Hymns—For Home and Church” collection, now available in English, Spanish, Portuguese, and French. These hymns will be accessible through the online Music Library, Gospel Library, and Sacred Music app within the next 24 hours.
This release represents the second collection of hymns in an ongoing, multi-year project that was initially announced in 2018.
“We recognize the power that sacred music has to unify the members of the Church throughout the world,” Elder Ronald A. Rasband said at the time. “We desire to offer a consistent core collection of hymns and songs in every language that reflects the diverse needs of the global Church in our day.”
The hymns were released by Church Newsroom. They are:
- “Amazing Grace”
- “Holding Hands Around the World”
- “Anytime, Anywhere”
- “God’s Gracious Love”
- “My Shepherd Will Supply My Need”
- “Oh, the Deep, Deep Love of Jesus”
- “Behold the Wounds in Jesus’ Hands”
- “This Is the Christ”
- “Come, Lord Jesus”
“Amazing Grace” was highly requested by members of the faith and leaders say the church can expect to see the new hymnal embracing beloved classics from multiple faith traditions.
“As more releases become available, we will see that we are sharing hymns with other Christian faiths,” Elder Matthew L. Carpenter of the Seventy, a hymnbook advisor, told Church Newsroom. “It’s a joy because we are all Christians worshiping Jesus Christ.”
“Amazing Grace” is one of the most beloved and widely recognized Christian hymns, known for its powerful message of redemption and grace. It was written by John Newton in 1772. Newton was a former slave trader who had a dramatic conversion to Christianity after surviving a violent storm at sea.
His personal experience of God’s mercy and grace is reflected in the hymn’s words, particularly the line “I once was lost, but now am found; was blind, but now I see.”
The hymn speaks of the transformative power of God’s grace and forgiveness, offering hope and comfort to those who feel weighed down by sin and life’s struggles. “Amazing Grace” has been sung in various settings, from church services to public events, and remains a powerful reminder of the promise of spiritual renewal and salvation. Over the centuries, it has been adapted into countless versions and has become an enduring symbol of hope and divine mercy.
Multiple new compositions can be found in the release as well. Most notable is “This is the Christ,” with lyrics by former First Presidency member James E. Faust.
