Bahía Blanca became the newest focal point of worship for Latter-day Saints in Argentina on Sunday, November 23, 2025, as Elder Ulisses Soares of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles dedicated the Bahía Blanca Argentina Temple. Church Newsroom reported the sacred event, which marked the opening of the country’s fifth house of the Lord and drew local members who have long anticipated having a temple closer to home.
From the outset of the service, Elder Soares emphasized the devotion he felt from those gathered. “From the moment we arrived, we have felt the warmth of your spirits and the strength of your faith,” he said, calling the day “a day of rejoicing, a day long hoped for, now fulfilled by the hand of the Lord.”
He reflected on his own early years in the Church, describing what it meant to wait many years before temple blessings were accessible to his family. By recalling that personal history, he honored the perseverance of the Saints in Bahía Blanca and surrounding regions.
“We are grateful the Lord inspired His prophet to build a temple in this land,” he said. “In moments like these, we are reminded of God’s perfect and infinite love for His children, reaching across time and distance to bless those who seek Him with humble hearts.”
The dedication also carried historical resonance. This year marks the centennial of the 1925 dedication of South America for the preaching of the restored gospel. Elder Soares called the new temple an appropriate conclusion to that centennial year.
“What a great blessing to conclude this beautiful year of celebration with the temple dedication,” he said. He described the moment as a continuation of the growth that began in Argentina a century earlier, calling the temple “a symbol of faith” and “a beacon and a light to Argentina.”
Local Latter-day Saints, invited to participate in the dedicatory services, expressed similar feelings of gratitude and anticipation. Nicolas Muñoz of Neuquén said the new temple would offer strength to Church members throughout the region.
“It will be a place of spiritual strength for the people here and now that the Bahia Blanca [Argentina] Temple is closer to us, we will try to go as often as possible to be strengthened,” he said.
For members living within the city itself, the dedication held an added feeling of closeness. “This is the house of the Lord,” said Bahía Blanca resident Beatriz Gottau. “And when we enter—or when we want to be closer to Him—it is only necessary to come here, and we will be in His presence.”
The Bahía Blanca Temple was first announced in April 2020 by President Russell M. Nelson, who described temples as central to the Restoration. “Temples are a crowning part of the Restoration of the fullness of the gospel of Jesus Christ,” he said at the time. “In God’s goodness and generosity, He is bringing the blessings of the temple closer to His children everywhere.”
Argentina is now home to temples in Buenos Aires, Córdoba, Mendoza, Salta, and Bahía Blanca, with additional temples announced for Buenos Aires City Center and Rosario. Nearly 500,000 Latter-day Saints worship in close to 750 congregations across the country, and the dedication of a new temple signifies expanded access to ordinances that members consider sacred.
For the Church of Jesus Christ, temples are set apart from local meetinghouses, which are used for weekly worship and community activities. Temples serve as places where faithful members participate in ordinances such as eternal marriage and proxy baptisms performed on behalf of deceased ancestors. The dedication of the Bahía Blanca temple brings these opportunities within easier reach for thousands of Latter-day Saints across southern Argentina.
