1871:President Brigham Young breaks ground for the St. George Temple (later the St. George Utah Temple). President George A. Smith, First Counselor in the First Presidency, offers the site dedicatory prayer.
1952: The Detroit Stake, the first stake in Michigan, is organized, with George W. Romney as president.
1978: Latter-day Saints missionaries enter the African republic of Nigeria for the first time.
