For members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, “Amazing Grace” resonates deeply as it speaks of the Savior’s love and the power of repentance. After first appearing in the Nauvoo Hymnal compiled by Emma Smith, “Amazing Grace” was removed from subsequent Latter-day Saint hymnbooks. Despite speculation that the hymn is not sufficiently aligned with Church doctrine, the reason for the omission is unclear. However, “Amazing Grace” is rumored (and hoped) by many members to be slated for a returning act.
After a performance of the hymn during the April 2024 General Conference, we’re crossing our fingers that “Amazing Grace” and its Christ-centered message will be one of the songs included in the Church’s ongoing hymnbook revision.
