Joseph Smith Borrowed Freemasonry for the Temple- So What?!

Did Joseph Smith’s use of Masonic ritual forms prove that the Latter-day Saint temple endowment is merely a fraudulent imitation—or are critics misunderstanding how sacred ritual has always developed?
Critics of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints are correct that Joseph Smith adapted certain ritual forms from Freemasonry. But that historical observation does not, by itself, tell us whether the temple endowment was inspired by God. It assumes that a divinely authorized ordinance must be historically original, appear fully formed without outside influence, or reproduce an ancient ritual in precisely the same outward form.
The Bible presents a much more complicated—and much more interesting—picture.
Early Christian baptism emerged within the world of Second Temple Jewish ritual immersion. Christian laying on of hands developed from gestures already used in Israelite and Jewish blessing, sacrifice, healing, commissioning, and leadership appointment. The Ark of the Covenant appears to reflect Egyptian sacred barques, portable shrines, and processional throne imagery. Even the Tabernacle and Solomon’s Temple participated in the broader architectural, priestly, ritual, and symbolic world of the ancient Near East.
Yet none of these similarities automatically disqualifies biblical worship as divinely inspired.
In this episode of Covenant Origins, we examine the difference between a ritual’s outward form and its covenantal function. We also explore what Latter-day Saints mean by “Restoration”—not merely an archaeological reconstruction of first-century Christianity, but the divine restoration and reauthorization of truth, priesthood authority, ordinances, covenants, and sacred patterns through continuing revelation.
The real question is not simply where a ritual form originated. The more important question is what God authorizes that form to teach, symbolize, and accomplish.
