Just as Noah was given special instructions for the people of his day, our prophet receives instruction from the Lord on our behalf as well. Noah taught that our commitment to following the prophet’s revelation actually increases our ability to receive personal revelation.

Scripture

Moses 8:23-24

And it came to pass that Noah continued his preaching unto the people, saying: Hearken, and give heed unto my words; Believe and repent of your sins and be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ, the Son of God, even as our fathers, and ye shall receive the Holy Ghost, that ye may have all things made manifest; and if ye do not this, the floods will come in upon you; nevertheless they hearkened not.

Hymn

Keep the Commandments| Hymn #303

Keep the commandments; keep the commandments!
In this there is safety; in this there is peace.
He will send blessings; He will send blessings.
Words of a prophet: Keep the commandments.
In this there is safety and peace.

Lesson

FOR CHILDREN

Read: Moses 8:23-24, found above.

Ask: What blessings did Noah promise would be available to the people if they repented and were baptized?

Explain: Noah prophesied that the people would be able to receive the Holy Ghost and that they would receive personal revelation and have “all things made manifest” if they “hearkened and gave heed unto [his] words,” repent and were baptized.

Video: God follows a pattern of using prophets to be His mouthpiece on the earth. Just as Noah was the prophet of his day—directing people to repent—we have a prophet today speaking for the Lord and testifying of Christ.

Ask: What is the prophet directing us to do in our day?

Read: Genesis 9:13 & 15 “I do set my bow in the cloud, and it shall be for a token of a covenant between me and the earth.”

“And I will remember my covenant, which is between me and you and every living creature of all flesh; and the waters shall no more become a flood to destroy all flesh.”

Explain: The Lord made a covenant with Noah that He would never again destroy all flesh by a flood. He placed a rainbow in the sky as evidence of this covenant. What evidence of God’s love do we see and feel when we keep covenants with Him?

Testify: I know we will have the Holy Ghost with us to comfort us and strengthen our testimonies when we keep the covenants we have made with the Lord.

Call to Action: What can we do as a family to better hearken unto the words of the prophet? What can we do to increase in faith? To improve our ability to receive personal revelation?

FOR TEENS & ADULTS

Read: Moses 8:23-24, found above.

Ask: What requirements did Noah list as pre-requisites to receiving the Holy Ghost and having “all things made manifest” (receiving personal revelation)?

1) Hearken and give heed unto [the prophet’s] words,
2) Believe
3) Repent of your sins
4) Be baptized

Explain: We will have all things made manifest unto us—all the personal revelation we need—if we begin with heeding the prophet’s words, having faith, repenting, and being baptized.

Quote: President Russell M. Nelson has taught, “In coming days, it will not be possible to survive spiritually without the guiding, directing, comforting, and constant influence of the Holy Ghost.

“My beloved brothers and sisters, I plead with you to increase your spiritual capacity to receive revelation.”

Teach: One way we can increase our spiritual capacity to receive personal revelation is by following the revelation given to the prophet.

Video: Following the prophet may feel limiting. It may not be politically correct or socially appreciated. But following the prophet provides safety in uncertain times.

Explain and Testify: Following the prophet requires faith, but as we put our trust in the Lord and honor His words given to His prophet, we will have our minds open to receive whatever other personal revelation we need in these trying last days.

FOR SINGLE STUDY

Read: Moses 8:23-34, found above.

Ponder: What parallels are there between Noah’s days and our own? What four things does Noah say we must do to receive the Holy Ghost and have “all things made manifest” unto us?

Watch or Read: President Benson spoke of our days in comparison to Noah’s. Sometimes people scoff at the words of a prophet declaring the people of our day as among the very strongest who has ever lived because they have been saying this for decades. If a mother elephant has been gestating her baby for 21 months, does two more months into her pregnancy make her less likely, or more likely to give birth? Just because we have been waiting for the Lord’s Second Coming for many years, it doesn’t mean it is less likely for the very last days to be now—it makes it all the more likely! Likewise, the people preparing the earth for His return aren’t less likely to be among the Lord’s most elect—they are much more likely to be so.

Full talk is available here.

Consider and commit: In what ways does the Lord want me to be better prepared to receive Him? How can I more closely follow the Lord through His servants the prophets?
