FHE Scripture

Helaman 6:37

And it came to pass that the Lamanites did hunt the band of robbers of Gadianton; and they did preach the word of God among the more wicked part of them, insomuch that this band of robbers was utterly destroyed from among the Lamanites.

FHE Lesson Hymn

Dare to Do Right, Children’s Songbook Pg. #158

1. Dare to do right! Dare to be true!
You have a work that no other can do;
Do it so bravely, so kindly, so well,
Angels will hasten the story to tell.

Chorus. Dare, dare, dare to do right;
Dare, dare, dare to be true,
Dare to be true, dare to be true.

2.Dare to do right! Dare to be true!
Other men’s failures can never save you.
Stand by your conscience, your honor, your faith;
Stand like a hero and battle till death.

Chorus. Dare, dare, dare to do right;
Dare, dare, dare to be true,
Dare to be true, dare to be true.

FHE Lesson

*For All Ages *

Read Aloud: The Gadianton robbers were a group of wicked men and women who caused a lot of sorrow among the people of the Book of Mormon. The group was made up of both Nephites and Lamanites and was named after Gadianton, the evil man who was the group’s second leader. Their goal was to gain money and power. They committed many crimes to get what they wanted and promised to keep their evil deeds a secret among their group. The Gadianton robbers varied in number and strength over time. At times the group would be destroyed, but then someone else would start it again. This evil group of people eventually destroyed the Nephite nation.

Show the following picture and point out the Gadianton robbers, located on the left hand side in hooded cloaks.

There were many times when the Nephites and Lamanites had to deal with the Gadianton robbers. The Gadianton robbers grew stronger when the people were more wicked. When the people repented and turned to the Lord, the Gadianton robbers grew weak.

Most of the the acts of the Gadianton robbers were done in secret, so the people let them happen. The secrets that united the Gadianton robbers were called “secret combinations.” The Lamanites, however, knew the robbers were dangerous, so they went after them.

Satan wants us to hide our sins from people who could help us. We should treat sins and temptations in our lives the same way the Lamanites treated the Gadianton robbers.

Ask: Will you watch your thoughts, words, and actions carefully? Are there wrong choices and secret sins that you need to get rid of? (Give time for each person to think about this, and do not suggest anyone share their answer unless they want to.)

Ask: Why is it hard sometimes to admit we have sinned? How can we accept the help of others when we’ve sinned?

FHE Game / Activity

Removing Sin Bean Bag Toss

Gather together a large number of socks, beanbags, or other small, soft items. Make two teams, and draw a dividing line in a room. Give each time an equal number of socks or beanbags. Begin a timer, then have each team try to throw their items out of their side of the room and into the other. When the timer stops, whoever has the most items on their side loses. Talk about how diligent we must be in order to remove sins from our lives. We must constantly throw out sin if we want to be victorious.
