“Beware Lest Thou Forget the Lord”

Come, Follow Me Study Guide | May 11-17

Reading: Deuteronomy 6–8151829–3034

Life fills quickly with noise, success, pressure, and distraction, so how do we keep our hearts anchored to God when everything competes for our attention? Moses warned that forgetting the Lord leads directly to pride, spiritual drift, and lost identity, which threatens our relationship with Him right now.

These chapters press us to choose loyalty, remember God’s hand, and shape daily habits that protect our hearts and future.

“One Before God,” by Joseph Brickey. | ChurchofJesusChrist.org

The Israelites camped on the plains of Moab, just east of the Jordan River, as they prepared to enter the promised land after forty years in the wilderness. Moses, now at the end of his life, gathered this new generation—many of whom had not witnessed the miracles in Egypt or the crossing of the Red Sea—and began to rehearse the law and recount the Lord’s dealings with their people.

He delivered a series of final sermons that reviewed God’s commandments, warned against idolatry among surrounding nations, and renewed the covenant between the Lord and Israel. He also taught laws about caring for the poor, prophesied of a future prophet like himself, and placed before the people a clear choice between life and death before ascending Mount Nebo, where he viewed the promised land before his death.
