Understanding personal revelation is a journey that many Latter-day Saints embark on with faith and hope. It’s a profound way to connect with our Heavenly Father and receive guidance tailored to our individual lives.

However, “reading” spiritual signals can sometimes be challenging. While God is always ready to hear our prayers and answer them, His ways are not our ways, and it takes practice and patience to attune our ears to hear His voice.

Here are some insights and steps to help you understand and recognize personal revelation.

1. Seek with a Sincere Heart

The first step in understanding personal revelation is to seek it earnestly. President Russell M. Nelson has emphasized the importance of having a sincere heart and real intent when seeking divine guidance. Approach your Heavenly Father in prayer, expressing your desires for and willingness to follow His will.

To access information from heaven, one must first have a firm faith and a deep desire. One needs to ‘ask with a sincere heart [and] real intent, having faith in [Jesus] Christ.’ ‘Real intent’ means that one really intends to follow the divine direction given.—Elder Russell M. Nelson

2. Live Worthily

Living in a way that invites the Spirit is crucial. Strive to keep the commandments, attend church, partake of the sacrament, and engage in daily scripture study and prayer. As you live worthily, you create an environment where the Holy Ghost can dwell and communicate with you.

3. Learn to Recognize the Spirit

Personal revelation often comes through the still, small voice of the Holy Ghost. This can manifest as feelings of peace, comfort, or a sense of knowing. Elder David A. Bednar has taught that the Spirit communicates in a variety of ways, including thoughts, impressions, and feelings. Pay attention to these subtle promptings.

Sometimes the spirit of revelation will operate immediately and intensely, other times subtly and gradually, and often so delicately you may not even consciously recognize it.—Elder David A. Bednar

4. Be Patient and Persistent

Sometimes, answers don’t come immediately. Be patient and continue to seek guidance. In Doctrine and Covenants 9:8, the Lord teaches us that He often requires us to study things out in our minds and make decisions before confirming them through revelation. Trust that the Lord’s timing is perfect.

5. Act on Promptings

When you receive a prompting, act on it. Faithfully following the guidance you receive will help you become more attuned to the Spirit. As you act, you will gain confidence in recognizing and understanding personal revelation.

6. Record Your Experiences

Keeping a journal of your spiritual experiences can be incredibly beneficial. Writing down the promptings and revelations you receive helps you remember them and recognize patterns in how the Spirit communicates with you.

Understanding personal revelation is a lifelong journey. By seeking earnestly, living worthily, recognizing the Spirit, being patient, acting on promptings, and recording your experiences, you can develop a deeper connection with your Heavenly Father and receive the guidance you need. Remember, personal revelation is one of the greatest gifts God has given us, and it is available to all who diligently seek it.
